As an IT instructor and cybersecurity practitioner, I can confidently say that CTF competitions are invaluable for anyone looking to sharpen their skills and gain practical experience.

Capture-the-Flag competitions are an excellent way to build real-world security skills. Need Help Choosing One? 

There are many websites that offer on-demand CTF experiences such as TryHackMe and HackTheBox, the second of which I would recommend once you have some experience under your belt, as those flags can be tricky even at the easiest levels. If you are part of an academic institution, I would highly recommend the National Cyber League’s seasonal competitions that take place in Fall and Spring of every year. If you’re looking for a realistic red vs. blue experience and are part of an NSA-endorsed center for academic excellence, I would also suggest the NCAE Cyber Games, an 8-hour intense security competition where you secure infrastructure against an actively attacking team of highly trained pentesters.
